Hafjell Overview
Hafjell is one of Norway’s most popular and accessible ski resorts, located just outside Lillehammer in the Gudbrandsdalen valley. It is best known for hosting alpine events during the 1994 Winter Olympics, which helped establish its reputation for high-quality infrastructure and well-groomed pistes. Today, Hafjell offers around 50 km of slopes served by modern lifts, including a gondola that gives quick access from the valley to the higher mountain areas, making it especially convenient for families and weekend visitors.
The ski area is well balanced, with gentle beginner zones, extensive intermediate cruising runs, and a selection of steeper Olympic-level pistes for advanced skiers. Hafjell is also highly regarded for its family-friendly facilities, including dedicated children’s areas, ski schools, and easy access to nearby accommodation and the town of Lillehammer. In addition to alpine skiing, visitors can enjoy cross-country trails, snow parks, and winter activities such as sledding, making Hafjell a versatile destination for all types of winter holidays.

Things to do in Hafjell
Activities - Winter in Hafjell offers much more than alpine skiing, making it a versatile destination for families and active travellers. In addition to its well-groomed slopes, visitors can enjoy extensive cross-country skiing trails that connect to the wider Lillehammer region, as well as snow parks and terrain parks for freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Families often take advantage of dedicated children’s areas, ski schools, and gentle beginner zones, while thrill-seekers can try night skiing or explore the Olympic downhill pistes. Beyond skiing, popular activities include sledding, snowshoeing, and relaxing spa experiences at nearby hotels. Its proximity to Lillehammer also allows easy access to cultural attractions and museums, adding variety to a winter stay in Hafjell.
Restaurants - Restaurants in Hafjell offer a wide mix of cosy mountain dining, family-friendly cafés, and lively après-ski venues spread throughout the ski area and valley. On the mountain, spots like Vidsyn serve locally sourced dishes with panoramic views, while ski-in restaurants such as Skavlen provide easy lunch stops with cakes, soups, and coffee right by the slopes. For a more social and energetic atmosphere, places like Gaiastova are well known for hearty lunches, tapas, and popular après-ski sessions. Down in the resort base, restaurants such as Hafjell Lodge and Woody’s offer burgers, casual dining, and sports-bar style meals, making Hafjell a destination with plenty of variety for both relaxed dinners and lively evenings.
Nightlife - Après-ski in Hafjell is generally relaxed and family-oriented, reflecting the resort’s role as a popular Norwegian holiday destination rather than a party hotspot. After skiing, visitors typically gather at slope-side cafés and bars such as Hafjell Lodge and Gudbrandsgard Hotell for drinks, waffles, and casual socialising with mountain views. The atmosphere is cosy and informal, with occasional live music or themed evenings, especially during weekends and holiday periods. For more varied nightlife, many guests head down to nearby Lillehammer, where pubs, bars, and cultural venues offer a livelier but still laid-back evening scene. Overall, Hafjell’s nightlife focuses on comfort, good food, and a warm Nordic atmosphere rather than late-night partying.
