Hundfjallet Overview
Hundfjället is one of the most popular ski areas in the Sälen mountain region of Sweden, known for its family-friendly atmosphere, modern lift system, and varied terrain. It forms part of the larger SkiStar Sälen ski system, together with neighbouring areas such as Tandådalen and Stöten, giving visitors access to one of Scandinavia’s largest ski networks. Hundfjället offers a good balance of easy, intermediate, and more challenging slopes, making it especially suitable for families and mixed-ability groups.
The resort is particularly famous for “Väggen” (The Wall), one of the steepest groomed slopes in Sweden, which attracts advanced skiers looking for a challenge. At the same time, the area is well known for its extensive beginner zones, ski schools, and the popular Trollskogen (Troll Forest), a magical themed ski trail designed for children. With modern lifts, reliable snow conditions, and ski-in/ski-out accommodation, Hundfjället combines convenience with a classic Scandinavian mountain experience, making it one of the key winter destinations in Sälen.

Things to do in Hundfjallet
Activities - Winter in Hundfjället offers a wide range of activities that go beyond alpine skiing, making it especially popular with families and mixed-ability groups. The main attraction is its well-groomed ski area, including gentle beginner zones, scenic cruising runs, and the famous “Väggen” slope for advanced skiers. Families can explore the magical Trollskogen, a themed ski trail filled with carved wooden trolls and playful features designed for children. Outside of skiing, visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing on nearby trails, snowshoeing through quiet forests, and snowmobile safaris across the Sälen mountains. Dog sledding tours and guided winter experiences are also popular, offering a taste of the Swedish wilderness. For relaxation, many guests take advantage of spa facilities, swimming pools, and cosy mountain lodges, while evening activities tend to focus on family entertainment and relaxed après-ski rather than nightlife.
Restaurants - Restaurants in Hundfjället offer a mix of cosy mountain dining, family-friendly cafés, and classic Swedish ski resort food spread across the slopes and base area. On-mountain options include places like Restaurang Lyktan, a popular summit restaurant known for its panoramic views and simple lunches, as well as traditional ski huts serving soups, burgers, and waffles during the day. Down in the village area, visitors will also find relaxed spots such as Våffelstugan Hundfjället for freshly made waffles and coffee, and restaurants operated by local groups like Bröderna Ahlén offering hearty meals inspired by Swedish mountain traditions. The overall dining scene is informal and family-oriented, focusing on convenience, comfort, and classic Scandinavian flavours rather than fine dining or nightlife-heavy venues.
Nightlife - Après-ski in Hundfjället is relaxed, cosy, and strongly family-oriented, reflecting the broader Sälen region’s laid-back Scandinavian style. After skiing, visitors typically gather at slope-side restaurants and bars such as Tandådalens Fjällhotell (easily accessed from Hundfjället) and nearby venues in the connected Sälen ski system for drinks, live music, and informal socialising. The atmosphere is more about warm cabins, fireplaces, and good food than late-night partying, with many guests preferring early evening dinners, spa time, or hotel lounges after a day on the slopes. For a slightly livelier scene, the neighbouring Tandådalen area offers some of the most active après-ski in Sälen, especially during peak holiday weeks, with DJs, themed events, and packed terraces. Still, even at its busiest, Hundfjället remains more relaxed than Alpine party resorts, making it especially popular with families and groups looking for a comfortable and easy-going winter nightlife experience.
