When Is the Cheapest Time to Go Skiing? A Month-by-Month Price Guide

Everyone loves a ski holiday, but nobody wants to pay more than they need to. Choosing when you travel can make a surprisingly big difference to the overall cost. From our experience helping customers book ski holidays, the same resort can be hundreds of pounds more expensive during a school holiday than it is just a few weeks later.

So, when is the cheapest time to go skiing? For most European ski holidays, we would put mid-January at the top of the list. March is another favourite, offering longer days and more sunshine, while early December and late April can bring some excellent deals if you choose your resort carefully.

December: Cheap, Festive and a Little Riskier

Early December can be one of the cheapest times to ski, particularly if you are flexible with your dates. The main thing to consider is snow. Some seasons get off to a fantastic start, while others take a little longer. High-altitude resorts and glaciers are usually the safer choice early in the season.

From our experience, the sweet spot is early to mid-December, before Christmas demand starts pushing prices up. Look at altitude and the resort's usual opening dates rather than simply choosing the cheapest hotel.

Christmas & New Year: Wonderful, But Not Cheap

Christmas and New Year are among the most expensive periods of the ski season. Everyone wants the same thing: snowy mountains, festive villages and the chance to spend Christmas or New Year on the slopes.

If travelling at this time is important to you, book well ahead, consider smaller resorts and look at self-catering accommodation. But if your priority is finding the cheapest ski holiday, this is not the time we would choose.

January: The Budget Ski Holiday Sweet Spot

If you ask us when to go skiing for the best combination of price, snow and quieter slopes, January is usually our first choice. Once the Christmas and New Year rush is over, demand drops and prices often follow.

The second and third weeks of January are particularly attractive. You can often find cheaper accommodation and packages, shorter lift queues and good availability for ski hire and lessons. Snow conditions are also normally well established. The downside? It can be cold and the days are shorter than in March, but for value, mid-January is hard to beat.

February: Excellent Snow, Higher Prices

February is one of the most popular months for skiing and usually offers excellent snow conditions. Unfortunately, it is also one of the hardest months to find a cheap ski holiday because of school holidays across the UK and Europe.

If you are travelling with children, February half-term can be difficult to avoid. Look beyond the biggest-name resorts, consider self-catering apartments, compare lift-pass prices and look at Sunday-to-Sunday or midweek travel. Booking early is particularly important for families.

March: Our Other Budget Sweet Spot

March is one of our favourite months for a value ski holiday. You can get good snow, longer days, more sunshine and, once the main February holiday period has finished, some very attractive prices.

The extra daylight is a real bonus. There is more time to ski and more chance of enjoying lunch or an après-ski drink outside in the sunshine. Early to mid-March is a fantastic compromise. Later in the month, altitude becomes more important, so look for high villages, high ski areas and good snowmaking.

April: Sunny, Quiet and Potentially Very Good Value

April can be a brilliant choice if you love sunshine and quieter slopes. Demand drops as people start thinking about summer holidays, so accommodation and packages can become much cheaper.

Choose the right resort. Lower-altitude areas may have limited skiing later in the season, while high-altitude resorts can continue to offer excellent conditions. Snow can become softer in the afternoon, so we like the spring routine: ski early, enjoy a long lunch in the sun, then head back out for a few more runs.

So, What Is Actually the Cheapest Month to Go Skiing?

• January – Best overall value, particularly after the first week.

• March – Best combination of value, sunshine and longer days.

• Early December – Potentially very cheap, but snow is less predictable.

• Late April – Great bargains at high-altitude resorts, but resort choice is important.

What About School Holidays?

If there is one thing to remember when looking for a cheap ski holiday, it is this: avoid school holidays whenever you can. Christmas, New Year, February half-term and Easter can all increase demand and prices. If you are travelling without children and have flexibility, moving your holiday by even one week can make a noticeable difference.

How Else Can You Save Money on a Ski Holiday?

• Choose your resort carefully

• You do not always need the biggest ski area. Smaller resorts can offer excellent skiing and lower overall costs, particularly for beginners and families.

• Consider staying slightly outside the main resort

• Ski-in/ski-out is convenient, but accommodation a little further away can be considerably cheaper if there is a reliable ski bus.

• Think about self-catering

• An apartment can give families and groups more flexibility and reduce the cost of eating out every day.

• Book ski hire in advance

• Pre-booking can often save money and means less time queuing when you arrive.

• Be flexible with travel days

• Compare the whole holiday

• Look at flights, transfers, accommodation, lift passes, equipment and food together. A cheaper lift pass does not necessarily mean a cheaper holiday.

Where Can You Find Good-Value Ski Holidays?

We regularly look for good-value holidays in Andorra, Italy, Austria, France and Bulgaria. Each destination has its own advantages, and the cheapest country is not necessarily the cheapest holiday once flights, transfers and accommodation are included.

Andorra can be a particularly strong option for value, beginners and families. Italy is often attractive for accommodation, food and overall holiday costs, while Austria offers a huge choice of accommodation. France has some expensive resorts, but there are also good-value alternatives if you avoid the biggest luxury names. Bulgaria can also offer very competitive prices for an affordable ski package.

Our Final Verdict

If you ask us to choose just one time of year for a great-value ski holiday, we would go for the second or third week of January. You can enjoy excellent snow, quieter slopes and some of the best prices of the season.

If sunshine and longer days are more important to you, March is a fantastic alternative. If you are happy to take a little more of a gamble with snow, early December and late April can produce some excellent bargains.

The most important thing is not simply choosing the cheapest month. It is finding the right combination of dates, resort, accommodation and travel costs for your particular trip.
