Tomamu Overview
Tomamu is a modern ski resort in central Hokkaido, best known for its high-quality powder snow, stylish resort facilities, and family-friendly atmosphere. Officially operated as Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, the resort combines excellent skiing with luxury accommodation, making it one of Japan’s most polished winter destinations. The ski area offers a good variety of terrain across wide groomed pistes, tree runs, beginner zones, and off-piste powder areas, attracting both families and experienced skiers looking for reliable Hokkaido snow conditions.
Tomamu is especially popular for its modern infrastructure and resort-style amenities, including ski-in/ski-out hotels, indoor wave pools, wellness facilities, and panoramic mountain restaurants. The resort receives abundant light powder snow throughout the winter season, and its tree skiing areas have become increasingly popular with international visitors. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, guests can enjoy activities such as snowmobiling, snow rafting, ice villages, and relaxing outdoor hot baths surrounded by snowy forests. Compared with more traditional Japanese ski towns, Tomamu offers a more self-contained and upscale resort experience while still showcasing the famous powder skiing that has made Hokkaido internationally renowned.

Things to do in Tomamu
Activities - Winter in Tomamu is built around a mix of skiing, snow activities, and immersive resort experiences set in the snowy landscapes of Hokkaido. The main attraction is the ski area itself, which offers well-groomed pistes, wide beginner-friendly slopes, and access to light, dry powder snow typical of the region. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, visitors can try snowshoeing, snow rafting, and guided winter nature walks through the surrounding forested mountains. One of the resort’s signature experiences is the Ice Village, a seasonal attraction featuring ice bars, illuminated domes, skating areas, and snow structures that create a unique nighttime environment. Families and non-skiers can also enjoy indoor wave pools, spas, and relaxation facilities within the resort’s hotels, making Tomamu a strong all-weather destination even during cold spells. In the evenings, activities tend to focus on dining, hot springs, and gentle entertainment rather than nightlife. Overall, Tomamu combines winter sports with curated, family-oriented attractions and a strong emphasis on comfort and resort-style relaxation.
Restaurants - Restaurants in Tomamu are concentrated within the resort’s large, self-contained hotel complexes and reflect a mix of Japanese culinary tradition and international resort dining. Most guests eat within the two main hotels and connected facilities, where a wide variety of buffet-style restaurants, casual cafés, and more refined dining options are available. The cuisine often highlights the strengths of Hokkaido, including fresh seafood, rich dairy products, locally grown vegetables, and warming winter dishes such as hot pots, ramen, and grilled meats. Many restaurants are designed for convenience and variety, making it easy for families and groups to find something suitable after a day on the slopes. In addition to Japanese food, there are also Western-style buffets and fusion options catering to international visitors. Dining in Tomamu is closely tied to the resort experience itself, with some restaurants offering panoramic views of snowy landscapes or easy access to evening attractions like the Ice Village. Overall, the food scene emphasizes comfort, variety, and accessibility within a modern alpine resort setting.
Nightlife - Après-ski and nightlife in Tomamu are centered around the resort’s modern, self-contained atmosphere rather than a traditional ski-town party scene. Evenings in Tomamu are generally relaxed and family-friendly, with most social activity taking place inside the resort hotels, restaurants, lounges, and entertainment areas operated within the larger resort complex. After skiing, visitors often gather for drinks, casual dining, or Japanese whisky and sake in stylish hotel bars rather than crowded après-ski venues. A signature part of the Tomamu experience is relaxing in indoor spas and hot spring facilities after a day on the slopes, reflecting the broader Japanese winter culture of combining skiing with wellness and comfort. The resort also offers unique attractions such as the Ice Village, a seasonal winter installation featuring ice bars, illuminated structures, skating areas, and cafés built from snow and ice, creating a distinctive nighttime atmosphere. Compared to destinations like Niseko, Tomamu’s nightlife is quieter and more curated, focusing on scenic winter experiences, good food, and relaxation rather than late-night partying.
