Yllas Overview

Ylläs is one of Finland’s largest and most scenic ski resorts, located above the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. The resort is split between two villages, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, and is known for its vast, uncrowded ski area set around the Ylläs fell, one of the highest points in southern Lapland. With long winters, reliable snow conditions, and extensive natural terrain, Ylläs is especially popular with visitors seeking space, nature, and a more relaxed alternative to busier Alpine destinations.

The ski area offers over 60 km of alpine slopes and one of the most extensive cross-country skiing networks in the world, with more than 300 km of groomed trails. The terrain caters to all levels, from gentle beginner runs to long, scenic descents and some challenging off-piste opportunities. Beyond skiing, Ylläs is a major hub for Arctic activities such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, husky safaris, and reindeer experiences. It is also one of the best places in Finland to see the Northern Lights due to its dark skies and minimal light pollution. Combining wilderness, authentic Lapland culture, and excellent winter sports infrastructure, Ylläs is considered one of the top all-round winter destinations in Scandinavia.

Things to do in Yllas

Activities - Winter in Ylläs offers a wide range of Arctic experiences set in one of Finland’s most pristine wilderness areas. In addition to alpine skiing and snowboarding on its extensive slopes, visitors can explore over 300 km of world-class cross-country skiing trails that pass through snowy forests and open fell landscapes. Snowshoeing and winter hiking are also popular ways to experience the quiet surroundings, while snowmobile safaris allow access to remote Arctic terrain. Ylläs is especially known for classic Lapland activities such as husky sledding and reindeer safaris, which give visitors a chance to experience traditional northern transport and Sámi culture. On clear nights, the resort is one of the best places in Finland to see the Northern Lights due to its dark skies and low light pollution. Families can enjoy sledging areas and beginner-friendly slopes, while those seeking relaxation often use traditional Finnish saunas and spa facilities. Together, these activities make Ylläs a complete winter destination combining adventure, nature, and Nordic culture.

Restaurants - Restaurants in Ylläs are varied and spread across both villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi as well as directly on the slopes, offering everything from casual cafés to traditional Lapland cuisine. On the mountain, skiers can stop at numerous slope-side restaurants such as Y1 Ski Pub, Taiga, Bistro Hissi, and Aurinko, which serve burgers, soups, pizzas, and warming drinks in relaxed ski-in/ski-out settings. For more traditional dining, places like Ylläskota offer cosy Lappish-style interiors with à la carte menus featuring reindeer, fish, and locally sourced ingredients. ([Ylläskota][2]) In the villages, visitors also find a mix of pubs, cafés, and restaurants serving everything from fast food and waffles to more refined Nordic dishes. Overall, the dining scene in Ylläs reflects the resort’s character: informal, welcoming, and closely connected to nature, with plenty of options for both quick breaks during a ski day and relaxed evening meals in a warm Arctic atmosphere.

Nightlife - Après-ski and nightlife in Ylläs are relaxed, cosy, and closely connected to the surrounding Arctic nature rather than a high-energy party scene. After a day on the slopes, visitors typically gather at slope-side bars and pubs such as Y1 Ski Pub or enjoy a warm drink and live music at venues in Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi. The atmosphere is informal and social, often centred around good food, local beers, and fireside relaxation rather than late-night clubbing. For a livelier evening, occasional events, DJ nights, and seasonal après-ski parties take place during peak winter weeks, especially around holidays and ski competitions. However, even at its busiest, Ylläs maintains a calm and authentic Lapland character. Many guests choose to end their day in a traditional Finnish sauna or by watching the Northern Lights, making nightlife here more about nature, wellness, and atmosphere than constant entertainment.
