Set high in Italy’s Piedmont region, Sauze d’Oulx is one of the best-known resorts within the vast Vialattea ski area. Sitting at around 1,509 metres above sea level, the resort combines traditional Alpine scenery with an energetic atmosphere, making it a destination that appeals to skiers looking for both mountain adventure and plenty to do after the lifts close.

The skiing is one of Sauze d’Oulx’s major attractions. The local sector provides more than 100 kilometres of skiable terrain, with pistes ranging from relatively gentle slopes to demanding descents. Many runs are notably wide and travel through attractive areas of conifer forest, giving the skiing a distinctly scenic character. The Sportinia sector, at approximately 2,000 metres, is an important hub for accessing some of the higher and more challenging terrain as well as routes towards the wider Vialattea network.

One of the biggest advantages of staying in Sauze d’Oulx is that skiers are not restricted to the local slopes. The resort forms part of Vialattea, an interconnected international ski area extending across several Italian resorts and into France at Montgenèvre. Altogether, Vialattea offers around 400 kilometres of skiable pistes, with elevations reaching approximately 2,800 metres. This scale means that confident skiers can spend several days exploring different sectors without repeatedly skiing the same terrain. There is also plenty of variety within the Sauze d’Oulx sector itself. Intermediate skiers are particularly well served by the broad red runs that wind through the forests, while beginners have easier pistes where they can develop their confidence. More experienced skiers can seek out steeper sections and longer descents, including historic runs such as the Gran Pista and Rio Nero. The official resort information lists 13 lifts serving the local area.

Away from the slopes, Sauze d’Oulx has a personality that distinguishes it from quieter mountain villages. Its historic centre features stone buildings and cobbled streets, while bars, restaurants and après-ski venues create a lively evening scene. The resort is particularly associated with après-ski, so visitors can easily combine a full day on the mountain with social evenings in the village.

Sauze d’Oulx also has a notable sporting heritage. The area has long been associated with Italian alpine skiing and was one of the venues for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, when the nearby village of Jouvenceaux and Sauze d’Oulx hosted freestyle events. The wider Vialattea area has subsequently continued to host major international skiing competitions.

Accessibility is another useful feature. The resort is located in the Alta Val di Susa, relatively close to the Fréjus Tunnel and within convenient reach of Turin, making it practical for visitors travelling by road from other parts of northern Italy or across the French border. Its position also makes it possible to combine a mountain holiday with time in Turin or other Piedmont destinations.

Activities - In addition to skiing and snowboarding, in Sauze d'Oulx you can practice ski touring, Nordic walking and snowshoeing. As a more relaxing activity you can visit the leisure center.

Restaurants - Sauze d'Oulx is home to over 40 restaurants, so it's the perfect place for food lovers. Among the places we recommend you try are La Griglia, for excellent pizzas, Sugo's, the perfect place for pasta lovers, and L'Ortiche, it is an elegant restaurant, offering pasta, meat and excellent desserts.

Nightlife - Sauze d'Oulx is the liveliest of the Milky Way locations and is the perfect place for lovers of apres-ski and nightlife. Among the places you can't miss are the Village Cafe, where you can sip excellent beer, Sports Cafe, a place particularly frequented by locals and Miravallino, with excellent cocktails, Lampioni, which offers excellent wines in a typically Italian atmosphere.
