Gitschberg Jochtal Overview

Gitschberg Jochtal is a ski resort located in the Puster Valley, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The peculiarity of this area lies in the fact that, despite being located within Italian territory, the language spoken by most of the population is German, which is why it has such a distinctive name.

Despite its small size, this resort offers slopes suitable for all levels of skiing, although beginners and intermediate skiers in particular will have the most fun here. However, there are also more difficult slopes where more experienced skiers can challenge themselves and have fun.

The village itself is quite small, but Gitschberg Jochtal is located just a few kilometres from other villages and also from the town of Brixen, which offers a charming old town centre, many restaurants, bars and shops.

Things to do in Gitschberg Jochtal

Activities - In addition to skiing and snowboarding, you can also enjoy cross-country skiing, tobogganing and winter hiking in this resort. As mentioned above, there are numerous villages just a short distance from Gitschberg Jochtal, so you can take a stroll through these picturesque villages and, during the Christmas season, visit the Christmas markets. Furthermore, a few kilometres away, there is a leisure centre with a swimming pool and wellness facilities.

Restaurants - The ski resort of Gitschberg-Jochtal in South Tyrol offers a pleasantly varied food scene that reflects the region’s mix of Alpine and Mediterranean influences. Across the slopes and in the valley villages of Mühlbach, Meransen, and Vals, you’ll find everything from traditional ski huts serving hearty mountain dishes to relaxed pizzerias and welcoming family-run restaurants. On the mountain, rustic huts such as the Bacherhütte and Ochsenalm are popular stops for skiers, offering sun terraces, regional specialties, and classic South Tyrolean comfort food—perfect for a long lunch break between runs. At the top stations, larger self-service and sit-down restaurants provide quick, convenient options with panoramic views of the Dolomites and surrounding valleys. Down in the valley, the dining scene becomes more varied. You’ll find cosy pizzerias, après-ski bars, and traditional inns serving local dishes like dumplings, speck platters, and homemade pasta. Many spots are family-run, giving the area a relaxed and authentic feel rather than a high-glamour resort atmosphere.

Nightlife - Après-ski in Gitschberg-Jochtal is generally relaxed and atmospheric rather than loud or party-driven, making it a great choice for those who prefer a more traditional Alpine ski experience. On the mountain, a handful of cosy huts and sun terraces offer the classic end-of-skiing routine: a drink in the sun, music playing softly in the background, and views across the South Tyrolean Dolomites as the slopes wind down for the day. Popular spots such as the mountain huts around Meransen (Maranza) and Jochtal are where skiers tend to linger in the late afternoon, enjoying local wines, beers, and warm hospitality. The vibe is friendly and social, but noticeably more laid-back compared to larger party resorts in Austria or France. In the valley, nightlife remains low-key but enjoyable. Towns like Mühlbach offer a selection of hotel bars, small pubs, and cafés where guests gather for a quiet drink or a relaxed evening after dinner. Many hotels also have their own lounge bars, which often become the main social hub in the evening. For those seeking livelier nightlife, nearby cities such as Brixen (Bressanone) or even Bruneck (Brunico) offer a wider choice of bars, wine bars, and occasional live music venues, all within a reasonable drive.
